Apple pie, creamy vanilla ice cream, and homemade salted caramel are blended together for the most amazing frozen treat.

I shared this easy Homemade Salted Caramel Sauce recipe last week, and today I want to show you one way to use it in a recipe.  Pie season is upon us and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than having a slice of apple pie a la mode in a sippable form.  It’s complete with ice cream, generous swirl of whipped topping and salted caramel sauce, and some of that buttery streusel on top!

This milkshake is amazing whether you sip it with a straw or eat it with a spoon.  It comes together in minutes and is so easy to whip up for two or for a group.

My milkshake starts with Marie Callender’s® Dutch Apple Pie fresh from the oven.  Make sure it is completely cooled so that it doesn’t melt the ice cream when you start blending with other ingredients.  This recipe will work with any slice of pie – I can’t wait to make one with Southern Pecan or Pumpkin Pie!

I like a thick milkshake with apple pieces and crunchy bits of pie crust, so I pulsed it few times instead of blending it until it’s completely smooth.  If the milkshake is too thick for your liking, feel free to add more milk until the desired consistency is reached.

Author Karen @ The Tasty Bite

Ingredients

For salted caramel sauce:

  • 6 tbsps unsalted butter diced
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

For apple pie milkshake:

  • 2 slices apple pie cooled to room temperature
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 2 cup milk
  • Reddi-Wip whipped topping for serving

Instructions

  • To make the salted caramel sauce, mix together butter, sugar, and heavy cream in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture is thick and golden in color, about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and sea salt. Let mixture cool to room temperature.
  • Place pie, ice cream, and milk into a blender and blend until smooth (or pulse for slightly chunky texture).
  • Drizzle caramel sauce into glasses and pour milkshake. Garnish with whipped topping and streusel if desired. Serve immediately.

Even though Thanksgiving is still a few weeks away, I am in prime holiday prep mode and can’t wait to send out cookies and treats to my family and friends this holiday season.  Now, if you agree with me that this season is more about giving than receiving, why not give a put together a pie basket as a gift?

People just love receiving freshly baked pies!  To package them for gifting, I like to use decorative cellophane paper and tie with baker’s twine or festive ribbon.

The pie would be just perfect by itself, but you could also include in a gift basket a few toppings that go along with the pie.  I like to add a can of Reddi-Wip® (who doesn’t like a dollop of whipped topping?!) and Homemade Salted Caramel Sauce in half pint jars.  I know if I received a gift like that, I’d absolutely love it!

I’ve created these printable round labels for canning jar lids (can be printed on label paper).  You can also print the recipe card for the Salted Caramel Sauce and include that in your gift basket.  That way the recipient can make their own and then “pie it forward” to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers!

You can find Marie Callender’s® Dessert Pies and Reddi-Wip® at your local Walmart.  What are your favorite ways to enjoy dessert pies during the holiday season?

  1. I love the dutch apple pie and I bet it tastes amazing in a milkshake. Those little jars are adorable, too. I need to try that caramel sauce! [client]
