Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwiches combine savory ham and cheese melt, French toast, and waffles – all in one bite!

I always thought Monte Cristo sandwich was a strange concept. It’s basically a ham and cheese sandwich dipped in egg batter and fried, then served with sweet jam and a generous dusting of confectioners’ sugar. It’s sweet and savory, and it always confused me when you would eat it (breakfast dish? lunch?) until I tried a breakfast version at a cafe recently and just love it. At first I was a bit doubtful about the combination, but once I tasted it I wanted to eat it again, for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner!

Why eat a sandwich out of bread when you could be eating one out of waffles?  Swiss cheese and ham slices are sandwiched between two thick waffles with sweet raspberry jam and Dijon mustard, then dipped in a egg batter just like French toasts do, and fried until golden brown on both sides. Mmmm it’s so good I can almost taste it.

Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwiches

Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwiches combine savory ham and cheese melt, French toast, and waffles – all in one bite!
Servings 4
Author Karen @ The Tasty Bite

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp raspberry jam
  • 8 Eggo homestyle waffles thawed
  • 2 tsps Dijon mustard
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 12 oz thin-sliced honey ham
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tbsps unsalted butter
  • Confectioners' sugar and maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  • Spread 1 tablespoon raspberry jam on each of the four waffles. Place Swiss cheese and ham slices on top. Spread 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard on each of the other four waffles and top each sandwich.
  • Whisk together eggs and milk in shallow dish. In a large nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Dip sandwiches into egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then add to pan. Cook on each side for about 2 minutes or until golden brown and cheese has melted.
  • Cut each sandwich into halves and dust confectioners' sugar on top. Serve warm with maple syrup.

With breakfast this good, I may just have it for lunch and dinner too.

I love this recipe because there is so much you can do with it. All you have to do is swap out some ingredients and you have something completely different. Roasted turkey, cheddar, and jalapeno pepper jelly would be a great combination, and so is ham, smoked gouda, with apricot preserves — you can really get creative with this.

For this recipe, I decided to use Kellogg’s Eggo Thick & Fluffy Original Waffles, which now have colors and flavors from natural sources.  Waffles make great bread substitutes when making sandwiches, and you can use any variety you like. Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles is another favorite.

Be sure to find the full Eggo product line at Walmart with no artificial flavors and colors from natural sources! Earn $0.50 when you purchase any ONE Eggo® Thick & Fluffy Waffles variety, 6 ct. pack only at Walmart. Available while supplies last.

Could these be made ahead and frozen?

    • Yes! You can make them ahead and frozen. When you’re ready to eat, you can reheat it in the microwave, toaster oven, or airfryer until the sandwiches are heated through and the waffles turn crispy.
