Kitchen Sink Ice Cream Sundae Recipe Ingredients

  • Ice cream: You can use any kind of ice cream as the base for your sundae, but I like to start with basic vanilla ice cream because of all the delicious toppings we will be adding. Homemade or store-bought will work.
  • Chocolate chips: This is used for making the two-ingredient chocolate magic shell.
  • Coconut oil: Coconut oil should be at room temperature to make it easier to measure and spend up the melting process
  • Whipped cream
  • Toppings: I came up with this combination of sundae toppings for a good variety of flavors and textures. There are honey roasted peanuts, colored sprinkles, mini marshmallows, crushed cookies, and gummy bears.

What are some other toppings you can use?

If you want to switch it up, use your imagination and think about all the textures you want to include. Here are some topping ideas:

  • Whipped cream
  • Crunchy nuts (peanuts, pecans, almonds, walnuts)
  • Crushed pretzels
  • Toasted coconut
  • Peanut brittle
  • Cookie crumbs
  • Leftover cake, doughnut, brownies, waffles
  • Caramel sauce
  • Hot fudge sauce
  • Maraschino cherry

I used Chips Ahoy! Cookies with Hershey’s Milk Chocolate and Chips Ahoy! Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Cookies as toppings for my fundae. These scrumptious cookies are new twists on the classic and delicious either as a treat or for adding to dessert recipes. Talk about a flavor explosion!

What is the best way to serve this sundae?

You can serve this sundae in mini dessert bowls or even a waffle bowl.

How to make the chocolate magic shell

All you need to make the chocolate magic shell is chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate) and coconut oil.

  • Heat chocolate and coconut oil in a heat-safe bowl in the microwave.
  • Make sure everything is fully melted and well combined.
  • Let the chocolate mixture cool down before using, otherwise, your ice cream might melt when you pour the sauce over it.
  • You can store it in a mason jar in the refrigerator (it will harden). When you’re ready to use it, just warm it up in the microwave until the mixture becomes runny again.

How long does it take for the chocolate magic shell to harden?

Once the chocolate mixture is poured over ice cream, it quickly hardens into a thin layer of chocolate coating in a few seconds. It gives your sundae that perfect layer of chocolate shell around the ice cream, but still stays soft enough to break apart and enjoy.

Can you make this sundae ahead of time?

You can scoop out the ice cream and keep the ice cream in the freezer until right before you’re ready to assemble the sundae. If you make the chocolate magic shell ahead of time, simply heat it up in the microwave until melted and let cool before drizzling over the ice cream right before you’re ready to serve.
