Copycat Disney Dole Whip (pineapple soft serve)

Last Updated on January 21, 2024 by Karen

Sweet, creamy, frosty Copycat Disney Dole Whip can easily be made at home with only a few simple ingredients! This pineapple soft serve is the perfect refreshing dessert to enjoy on a hot summer day.

There are a few treats that Disneyland fans are obsessed with: Mickey Mouse candy apples, Mickey Mouse ice cream bars, churros, and of course, the iconic Pineapple Dole Whip! The classic pineapple soft serve can be found at the snack stands throughout Disneyland, and in my opinion, it’s the best magical, cooling treat to snack on while waiting in line on a hot day.

Good news! The classic treat you love can be made at home. And it’s as close to the authentic flavor as you’ll get!

If you loved this frozen treat, try our Tropical Papaya Smoothie or Frozen Peach Bellinis (frozen cocktail for the grown-ups), both are equally refreshing and cooling on a warm summer day!

With only four simple ingredients, no fancy soft serve machine required, and less than 10 minutes to prepare, enjoying this treat on a hot summer day feels almost like being on a vacation.

Since the recipe uses frozen pineapple, you can make this recipe all year long. In fact, whenever I have a can of pineapple chunks or tidbits that I can’t use up, I’ll drain the juice, reserve it for later, and freeze the pineapple pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. That way, I can enjoy this pineapple soft serve whenever my sweet tooth comes calling.

What is a Dole Whip?

Dole Whip is a soft serve frozen pineapple dessert created by Dole Food Company in the 1980s. It was served at Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room and now also at Walt Disney World. Dole whip is sweet, creamy, and has the consistency of soft serve ice cream.

Is Dole Whip only served at Disney Parks?

It’s an iconic treat served at Disney Parks, but it’s not the only place you can find it these days. When we went to Oahu, Hawaii and visited the Dole Pineapple Plantation, we were able to find the frozen treat there. I’ve also had Dole Whip in various ice cream shops around Hawaii and across the country.

What ingredients do you need to make Copycat Disney Dole Whip?

It’s made with just four ingredients:

Frozen pineapple chunks – Feel free to use storebought frozen pineapple chunks, or freeze your own fresh pineapple chunks. If you can’t find frozen pineapple at your grocery store, you can use a can of pineapple chunks or tidbits in 100% juice (not in syrup), drain the juice (reserve for use), and freeze the pineapple on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Coconut milk – I use full fat unsweetened coconut milk to achieve that creamy, frosty consistency.

Lime juice – A little goes a long way.

Sugar (optional) – I find that sugar is usually not necessary with the ripe and sweet pineapple chunks I use, but if you feel that it needs a bit more sweetness, you can add a little sugar or sweetener of choice, such as maple syrup, honey, agave syrup, or Stevia.

I love that this at-home version is made with natural ingredients, and there is no artificial flavoring, coloring, or stabilizers.

Is this homemade Copycat Disney Dole Whip vegan?

Yes! The original recipe shared by Disney calls for frozen pineapple, pineapple juice, and vanilla ice cream. But this homemade Dole Whip is dairy-free, using coconut milk (or any other dairy-free milk you prefer).

Do you need to use a powerful blender?

Having a powerful blender like Vitamix or Ninja yields the best results, but I’ve had success using my small food processor. I just let the pineapple thaw slightly, then pulse until everything comes together.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Unfortunately, this is one of those recipes that are best when eaten right away. A little chill time is okay if you find that it’s too soft, but if you leave it in the freezer too long, it will turn completely solid in the freezer.

How do you make a Dole Whip float?

Simply fill a glass halfway with Dole Whip, pour pineapple juice on top, and finish it off with a maraschino cherry. Enjoy!

How do you achieve that authentic Dole Whip swirl?

Freeze the mixture for about 30 minutes, transfer it to a piping bag with a large star piping tip, and pipe into the serving cup right before serving.

What can I do with the leftover Dole Whip?

If you have made more Dole Whip that you can immediately eat, pour the mixture into popsicle molds and freeze until solid for some delicious and refreshing pineapple popsicles! You can also pour the leftover into an ice cube tray, and then blend it up again next time you want to have some Dole Whip.
