4 Small Ways to Get a Healthier Start to the New Year

Last Updated on February 17, 2022 by Karen

Thank you Freschetta Gluten Free Pizza for sponsoring this post. Start the year off right with delicious frozen pizza that just happens to be gluten-free!

We’re halfway through January, and I know a lot of you have set your healthy living goals and resolutions for the new year and are hopefully sticking to them. For some people it means cutting back on sweet treats and for others it means trying to eat more veggies. Many of you are aiming for more physical activities or exercising portion control.

One thing I’ve learned about myself is that if I try to make too big of a change, it just won’t work out well. So, I’m sharing four small ways today on what I’m doing to get a healthier start to the new year. Hopefully you can take away something that will help you! For total health and fitness tips go through the site.

#1: Water, water, water

Water rehydrates your body and keeps your digestive system moving. This has made the biggest difference for me and it’s such a small and easy task. I’m not that good at drinking water throughout the day, so having a cute water bottle motivates me to drink more of it.

Bored with standard H2O? Make a pitcher of refreshing water infused with lime, cucumber, and mint. Also keep in mind that certain fruits and veggies like cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, and grapes have high water content.

#2: Keep a workout schedule, no matter how small

And better yet, stick it on your fridge so it reminds you to exercise every time you reach into the fridge for a soda or a treat. When I was training for my half marathon, I followed a running program that would specify which days of the week I would run, rest, stretch, or cross train. I find it super helpful to have a schedule to follow, especially this time of the year when my biggest motivation is to curl up on the couch under warm blankets.

The workout schedule doesn’t have to be a huge one. As a new mom, my goal is to make it outside for a 30-minute walk, one to two days a week, and yoga once a week. This new workout goal is manageable for me and is a step up from the very little I was doing the last half of last year after having a baby. In this phase of life, I can no longer be an everyday gym person, but making a few little changes can make a big difference.

#3: Eat regularly, and plan small meals and snacks throughout the day

There should never be a time of the day when you’re at the point of starving. Eat small meals throughout the day to prevent feeling hungry. I find that when I’m starving, I will eat anything and everything in sight and make poor food choices. I always have healthy snacks with me wherever I go – sometimes an apple, a bag of mixed nuts, cheese or carrot sticks.

#4: Plan, prep, and keep healthy food options on hand

Set yourself up for success! Plan out your meals on the weekend, grab a few containers and prep a few easy healthy meals that you can eat during the week. That also means foods that you crave! I follow an 80%/20% rule when it comes to healthy eating. I don’t want to give in to every craving, but I don’t want to ignore them either and binge later.

We love our pizza night around here, and even though it may look a little different these days with a baby, we still enjoy our pizzas at home from time to time. I’m currently five months postpartum, so I want to get back into a sensible healthy eating routine. Things can get a little busy over here around dinnertime and although I can’t make a healthy pizza from scratch, I’ve found some great better-for-you options at the store!

This is where Freschetta Gluten Free Pizza came to the rescue! Freschetta Gluten Free Pizza is crafted with 100% real cheese and flavorful sauce from vine-ripened tomatoes. You cook it the same way as you would with any frozen pizza, and you end up with this amazing golden brown, crispy, gluten-free crust!

With two delicious flavors to choose from, Pepperoni and Four Cheese, I couldn’t really pick a favorite. I love them both! Freschetta Gluten Free Pizzas are available in the freezer aisle of grocery stores nationwide (you can use the product locator at Freschetta.com to find a store near you).

Having these pizzas on hand makes for an easy, convenient, and tasty meal with little prep time – and sometimes that’s all I need to stay on track with my healthy eating goals!
