There used to be a hole-in-the-wall shop near Union Square that is the haven for all lovers of fried foods. They have some of my favorite treats like funnel cake and fried oreos, and just as I was excited to introduce to my friends about my newfound toothache in town, Led Zeppole closed down and zeppoles are nowhere to be found. They pop up occasionally at street fairs during the summer (usually during the San Gennaro Feast), but as far as getting a routine fix goes, no luck for me.
I went searching for possible recipes to make my own, and I came across many recipes for zeppoles. Most of the recipes finish with a powdered sugar galore, but I can’t really do that indoors. The neat freak inside me would just cringe when hours later I find powdered sugar in places powdered sugar really never should be. Instead, I made a dipping sauce with fresh blueberries and it proves to be a less messy, just as delicious route.
